Formations are all about trade-offs. There is no "perfect" tactic; instead, every choice you make strengthens one area of the pitch while weakening another.
The Three Variables
Your formation strength is measured against a standard 4-4-2 using three main bonuses:
Defensive Bonus
Possession Bonus
Attacking Bonus
How Trade-offs Work
When you change your formation, you are swapping one bonus for another:
- Going Offensive (e.g., 3-4-3): You gain an Attacking Bonus but sacrifice your Defensive Bonus. You will likely score more, but also concede more.
- Controlling the Game (e.g., 4-5-1): You gain a Possession Bonus but lose Attacking Bonus. You’ll keep the ball longer, but be less dangerous upfront.
- Strengthening the Back: Adding a 5th defender or moving a Midfielder to a Defensive Midfield (DMC) role increases your Defensive Bonus but reduces your possession or attack.
When to Change Tactics?
Against Stronger Teams: It is usually better to prioritize Defensive and Possession bonuses to survive their pressure.
Against Weaker Teams: Prioritize Attacking bonuses to maximize your goals.
Player Quality: If your strikers are weak but your midfielders are world-class, it makes sense to use a formation that boosts Possession rather than one that relies on heavy Attack.
